Library, dormitory burned in Malindi High School fire

Property of unknown value has been destroyed after a fire burnt down a library and dormitory in Malindi High school on Wednesday evening.
The incidence comes six hours after Kilifi County Commissioner Joseph Keter accompanied by security and education officers visited the school to inspect another dormitory that was razed on Tuesday night, affecting 140 students whose belongings were in the hall.
According to an eye witness, the fire is said to have begun at around 6.30pm when the students were about to go to classes for evening preps.
"We saw smoke coming from the dormitory and another coming from the library," said Mr David Mutua, a mathematics teacher.
Mr Mutua said that only one mattress was burnt in the dormitory, which was then pulled out by a security guard to stop the fire from spreading.
When the Nation arrived at the scene, volunteers were busy salvaging books from the burning library.
Fire brigadiers were also on site extinguishing fire which had burnt down one part of the library.
Police also arrived at the scene on time to control local residents who claimed they had gone to the school to help.
Malindi DCIO Paul Wachira said they have launched investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
Kabarnet High School fire
On Wednesday night, Nation also received reports that a dormitory at Kabarnet High School was also on fire and that a fire brigade and Kenya Red Cross were at the scene.
