Security beefed up at Likoni ferry channel

The government has partnered with private security firms to improve security at the Likoni ferry channel in Mombasa.

Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said metal scanners will be used to check all vehicles crossing the channel.

“Passengers undergo security checks but there is a loophole as motor vehicles are not checked thoroughly,” he said.

He said armed policemen with sniffer dogs will guard each ferry.

Mr Mohamed said private security guards play a big role in supplementing security efforts as they guard key buildings in the county.

Winster Security Company Managing Director Anthony Ndegwa hailed the initiative saying it will improve security in the county as checks by police and private guards will be well coordinated.

The County Commissioner also said security has been beefed up in Mombasa ahead of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KSSHA) conference that kicks off Sunday.

“Security measures have been put in place ahead of the teachers’ conference. More than 10,000 participants are expected to attend the meeting,” said Mr Mohamed.
