Police in Mombasa are investigating an incident where two security officers shot and injured three people at Coast General Hospital.

The security officers, said to be prison warders, allegedly shot indiscriminately at some relatives of patients at the hospital on Monday night in unclear circumstances.

According to sources at the hospital, a duty nurse and two people were confirmed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

The two other victims were identified as a college student and a friend who were at the hospital to visit the student’s relative.

The officers who were involved in the shooting were allegedly drunk.

The victims have recorded statements at Makupa Police station.

GRENADE ATTACK

The injured nurse, identified as Lucy Njoki, who has worked at the hospital for more than 20 years was shot while at the entrance of the staff gate.

“It was around 8.00pm as I was entering the staff gate when I heard gunshots. I thought it was a grenade and a few minutes later blood was oozing from my leg,” narrated Ms Njoki.

She added that the bullet penetrated her right leg and that she is scheduled to undergo surgery at the hospital’s theatre.

She said she will move to court to seek legal redress after she was issued with a P3 form.

According to her, the said officers started shooting when night guards at the exit gate denied them entry after being informed by another guard not to as they looked dangerous.

DANGEROUS

“The guard at the main entry warned the other guards at the exit gate not to allow them to pass claiming they were dangerous,” she added.

She said it is at that point that the two officers, dressed in civilian clothes, cocked their guns and started shooting haphazardly.
“It was just by luck that a firearm of the second officer jammed. We would now be talking of loss of innocent lives,” she added.

On Tuesday evening, Coast Region Police Commandant Robert Kitur referred the Nation to the newly posted Mombasa OCPD Mr Martin Otieno who was not immediately available.

“I have just arrived in Mombasa from Nairobi. Contact the OCPD for comment,” Mr Kitur said.
