Sonko Rescue Team comes to the aid of Mombasa woman with tumours

The Sonko Rescue Team has extended its humanitarian wings to Mombasa County.

It has offered to help a 22-year-old girl suffering from fibromatosis to undergo medical treatment in Nairobi.

Fibromatosis manifests itself in the form of soft tissue tumours on the human skin.

Treatment of the disorder is mainly surgical.

Social media was recently awash with pictures of the girl who has has a protruding growth on the back of her neck due to the medical condition.

Mariam Abdhallah Kombo developed the disorder when she was in Standard Seven at Bomu Primary School in Changamwe constituency.

COULD NOT CONTINUE WITH STUDIES

Although she completed her primary school education in 2008, she could not continue with her studies due to the condition, which dashed her desire to fulfil her career dreams.

Mariam, who is an orphan, was born and raised in Changamwe, where she lives with her aunt Mariam Mwijaka Kombo.

Her parents died when she was three years old.

“I have been living with her since her parents passed on. It was very painful, we are very poor and we could not afford medication. But seeing her go through this condition was very traumatising for me," she said.

Ms Kombo could not hide her joy when news reached her that the Nairobi senator would help her niece.

“She wants to be a teacher after completing her studies.

"This will be fulfilled and after the operation she will continue with her studies as she is a bright girl,” she said.

She pleaded with the Nairobi senator to set up a medical camp in the area, saying many people were suffering.

Senator Sonko, who is the patron of the Sonko Rescue Team, based in Nairobi, told the Nation by phone that he would help the girl.

He said he had consulted doctors and the CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital, where the girl will undergo the operation next week.

"She will leave Mombasa today morning (Sunday). I was touched after the pictures went viral on social media.

“Sonko Rescue Team with the help of Kenyatta National Hospital has pledged to help the girl regain her health and continue with her studies. This is just the beginning, we will do more,” he said.
