The Mombasa County Assembly on Tuesday confirmed Mtongwe Ward Representative Hamisi Mwidani as majority leader in a tense session.
Mr Mwidani took over from his Likoni counterpart Abdalla Kasagamba, whom ODM stripped of the position last week on allegations of incompetence and failure to unite the Assembly.
Before Speaker Thadius Rajwayi announced the change, Mr Kasagamba and Mr Mwidani exchanged bitter words.
Mr Kasagamba accused Mr Mwidani of plotting against him and asked the Speaker to intervene, adding that the party had schemed to remove him for no apparent reason.
Kongowea MCA Jabess Oduor came to Mr Kasagamba’s defence, asking the Speaker to allow him to continue as Majority Leader as he had done nothing wrong.
But Chief Whip Omar Ibrahim called for Mr Mwidani’s confirmation. He said this was the party’s decision and Mr Kasagamba should respect it.
Mr Kasagamba was forced to leave the majority leader’s seat after the Speaker confirmed that that was the party’s decision.
