Two armed robbers were Thursday afternoon gunned down along Mombasa’s Moi Avenue after they robbed a car dealer’s shop along the same street.

Mombasa County DCI boss Henry Ondiek said the two men were part of a three-man gang on a motorbike who had made away with loot stolen from the shop.

“This afternoon at around 12.30pm, our officers on patrol encountered three thugs on a motorbike.

"This happened as a result of information that the three had accosted a certain business premises within the CBD.

“Our officers met with the thugs and challenged them to stop but they defied the order. The officers then gunned down two while the third one escaped,” Mr Ondiek said.

Police recovered a Ceska pistol with two magazines, each with 12 rounds of ammunition.

“On further scrutiny we recovered a civilian fire-arm and driving licenses which we highly suspect might have been robbed from innocent members of the public,” he added.

Mr Ondiek said the incident came at atime when the coastal city was experiencing peace.

He warned criminals that officers in Mombasa and its environs were on high alert and would ensure that the calm the residents and businessmen have been enjoying is not disturbed.

He said police were still pursuing the third suspect who escaped.
