A prison warder at Shimo La Tewa Maximum Security Prison was Thursday arrested and disarmed by colleagues after shooting and injuring his wife.

The incident happened at the institution’s staff quarters.

The 26-year old mother of three was Thursday fighting for her life at the Coast General Hospital in Mombasa County.

Relatives told the Nation that the prison warder arrived home at around 1am drunk and picked a quarrel with the wife.

The officer’s colleagues said he had been on night patrol duty at some beach hotels when he abruptly returned to the staff quarters.

They said their colleague had passed by a pub within the quarters for some drinks before proceeding to his house.

“It was around 1pm when the gunshots were heard.

“Luckily, the officers neighbouring them responded and disarmed him.

"The woman was shot in the stomach and immediately rushed to hospital,” said an officer who did not wish to be named.

DISARMED AND ARRESTED

The officers who responded found the woman on the floor bleeding from stomach injuries.

The man was disarmed, arrested and was being held at Bamburi Police Station.

“When he got home at night, he started asking her for cigarettes and when she said there were none in the house, he threatened to kill her and that is when he reached for his gun and shot her in the stomach,’’ said Mr Kiplangat Kirui, the woman’s elder brother.

When the Nation visited Coast General Hospital, the woman’s relatives were seeking blood donations to try and save her life.

Mr Kirui urged Kenyans to donate blood for her sister whom he said was in dire need.

A doctor and a nurse who were attending to her said she had lost a lot of blood and had only received one pint while in the theatre on Thursday morning.

The doctor said the patient needed at least four pints of blood as she had lost a lot of blood due to the severe gunshot injury.

He said that her abdomen, diaphragm and liver were among the most severely damaged organs.
