A matatu sacco has been suspended indefinitely following a road accident that killed three people at Valley Arcade in Nairobi on November 25.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took action against Fast Track Sacco after meeting with public service vehicle officials.

In a statement, the authority’s director-general, Mr Francis Meja, directed that all vehicles belonging to the sacco be taken for inspection.

He said a preliminary report had indicated that KAV 063K, a 14-seater matatu, was not fitted with a speed governor and was in a poor condition at the time of the accident.

The matatu was heading towards Kawangware from the city centre, when the driver lost control and hit a City Hoppa mini-bus that was going in the opposite direction.

The three people who died are said to have been relatives. Three others sustained severe injuries.

The sacco is expected to account for all Road Service Licences issued to it by the transport authority.

Mr Meja has also given the Traffic Commandant the green light to impound vehicles belonging to Fast Track Sacco if found to be operating illegally.

The NTSA official advised the public not to board vehicles belonging to the sacco during the suspension period in order to avoid any inconvenience.
