Governors' wives to visit Huruma tragedy victims

Several governors' wives will Monday visit the victims of the building that collapsed in Huruma, Nairobi, to show solidarity with them.

The event will take place at the command post next to where the tragedy occurred.

Dr Susan Mboya-Kidero will lead five other spouses of governors from Nakuru, Narok, Kiambu, Bomet and Turkana in the visit.

The number of people who died the collapsed building has risen to over 40 as 135 others were rescued from the rubble of the six-storey residential block.

Several others are still nursing injuries in various city hospitals.

The rescuers on Sunday announced that they would move their efforts to the Nairobi River in search of the 28 people who were still missing after the search on the debris was concluded.

Rescue efforts were slow, hampered by the fact that the collapsed building in was adjacent to a river that was blocking access to the site.

FUND TO SUPPORT VICTIMS

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, through the Affirmative Action Social Development Enterprise Fund (AASDEF) programme for Nairobi County, will Tuesday release funds to support the victims of the Huruma tragedy.

The funds will be used to help them pay rent for three months, assist them with provision of food and other basics.

“The funds will also assist their funeral expenses, and provide a school package for the school-going children affected to facilitate their going back to school,” read a communication from Marianne Kisanji, the ministry’s Deputy Director Communications.

The event, which will be held at Daima Primary School in Huruma, will be hosted by the office of the Nairobi Woman Representative Rachel Shebesh in partnership with Ministry.

The Cabinet Secretary Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Sicily Kariuki will preside over the function.

She will be accompanied by the principal Secretaries for Public Service and Youth (Mrs Lillian Omollo) and Gender Affairs (Mrs Zeinab Hussein).
