Ex-minister Dr Njoroge Mungai dies in hospital

Former cabinet minister Dr Njoroge Mungai has died at Nairobi Hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

Family sources confirmed that Dr Mungai, who was the late President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s personal physician died on August 16 2014.

“We as a family deeply regret to announce the death of Dr Magana Njoroge Mungai, former MP and Cabinet Minister today, August 16, 2014,” said the statement issued on behalf of the family by his daughter Ms Nyakio Mungai.

Dr Mungai served in the Foreign and Defence ministries in the late Mzee Kenyatta’s government.

He was also instrumental in the implementation of Kenya’s first constitution after independence in 1963.

Dr Mungai was born in 1926.

He studied at Alliance High School in Kiambu and later went to Fort Hare University.

He was also an alumnus of Stanford University, USA, where he studied medicine.

In September 2008, Dr Mungai came out to deny claims by an aide of former President Moi, Lee Njiru that President Kenyatta died of neglect. He maintained that Mzee Kenyatta died of old age.
