Embakasi residents sue over evictions

Over 400 residents of Embakasi on Monday moved to court seeking compensation over their eviction and the demolition of their houses.

Sophia Nyakerario Maina and Sebastian Adala together with 440 Maasai village residents sued the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), the Nairobi county government, the Internal Security Cabinet Secretary and the Attorney-General.

FORCED OUT

They claimed that they were legal owners of plots named in the Valuers Report Evaluation along North Airport road since1982 but were forced out four years ago by security officers.

The alleged that they were harassed by the officers and their children have been unable to attend school since an education institution was among the structures demolished.

They claimed the demolition had led to the disintegration of families, loss of business opportunities and had distanced them from their employers. They want the sued parties' actions declared unlawful and unprocedural.

They want it declared that the sued parties were required to have included the residents’ participation in formulating regulations, policies and standards for their eviction.

They further want the sued parties compelled to provide information relating to the suit including resolutions for their eviction as well as repossession of the disputed land.
