Nairobi Governor has called on members of the Luhya community in the city to support his bid for a second term in the 2017 general elections.

This comes after the appointment of Dr Robert Ayisi as the County Secretary two weeks ago.

Speaking during a meeting with some Luhya leaders and representatives at City Hall on Friday, Dr Evans Kidero said that for a long time, they have been disrespected and given handouts to vote for other candidates.

“We are tired of being given Sh200. Don’t be swayed come next election, take their money but vote for me,” said Dr Kidero.

At the same time, Dr Kidero urged the Luhyas in the city to register as voters so as to be able to vote for their leaders in the next elections, him being a candidate for the gubernatorial seat.

Dr Kidero said that he will appoint anyone who is qualified despite the community they come from.

“If you are qualified for a certain position why would I not give you the position?” said Dr Kidero.

Former Nairobi mayor George Aladwa urged the Luhya community not to allow more than one person to vie for the same seat as this could be perceived as disunity.

Mr Aladwa said that the position given to Dr Ayisi was an indication that the governor was supporting the community.

“This is a big position and despite challenges being faced by Dr Ayisi, we should support him as he is one of us,” said Mr Aladwa.

He lashed out at some MCAs fighting Dr Ayisi’s appointment and said that they were malicious.

He said that the community will meet with their leaders to find a way forward in the coming elections despite of their different political party affiliations.

“I am the ODM chairman but that doesn’t mean I cannot meet Amani and Ford People political leaders. We are all Luhya,” said Mr Aladwa.
