  • The reps said the city is an eyesore, citing what they said were mountains of stinking and uncollected garbage and roads that are permanently clogged.

Jubilee-affiliated ward reps in the Nairobi County Assembly on Wednesday called on Governor Evans Kidero to resign, saying he had failed Nairobians and turned the city into a huge slum.

The reps said the city is an eyesore, citing what they said were mountains of stinking and uncollected garbage and roads that are permanently clogged.

Led by Minority Leader Abdi Guyo, the MCAs spoke at City Hall and said the governor had been overwhelmed and was thus unable to deliver services to city residents and make the city more attractive to investors.

“The Nairobi governor should just resign,” said Mr Guyo.

Mr Guyo also said city streets had been turned into parking bays as matatus were now dropping off and picking up passengers at undesignated areas besides an increased number of street children and families roaming the city.

He added that the county government had been collecting huge revenues compared with the defunct City Council but residents were receiving unsatisfactory service.

REJECT APPOINTEE

The politicians also said they would reject Dr Kidero’s appointee for the post of county secretary, Dr Robert Ayisi, claiming the governor had flouted appointment procedures.

According to the County Government Act, the position of the county secretary should be occupied by a university graduate with 10 years of experience in administration and management and should go through a competitive process.

"Dr Ayisi has been in Nairobi for all these years but we have never seen any reform in the health sector that he led," said Guyo.

Mr Guyo said the poor state of health facilities in the city is an indication that Dr Kidero's appointee is not up to task.

He added that Dr Ayisi had not cleared his name over the disappearance of twins at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital last year.

Reached for comment, Dr Ayisi said the allegations against him had no basis and he would not discuss them.

Speaking by phone, he said he could only respond if Mr Guyo had substantiated his claims.

Meanwhile, MCAs from the Opposition, led by Chief Whip David Mberia, said they would support Dr Ayisi’s appointment, stating that the law allows the governor to appoint a county secretary without consulting anybody.

Efforts to reach the executive were futile as calls to the governor’s communications officers were unanswered.
