More schools torched as unrest escalates

Property of unknown value was destroyed after a dormitory at Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School in Dagoretti, Nairobi, caught fire on Tuesday night.

School principal Josphat Kuria said students were in class when the blaze broke out at 9pm.

The fire started at the dormitory housing around 100 students but students, with help from the public, put it out.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Elsewhere, in Nyeri County, a school is counting loses after a blaze razed a dormitory on Tuesday night.

Giakaibii High School students in Mathira were yet to come to terms with the fire that destroyed their property while some were forced to spend the morning in the cold.

The fire started at around 5:20am.

And in Gatundu South, a block of classrooms was reduced to ashes at Muhoho High School.

This comes barely a day after police arrested up to 109 students as 45 others were charged in court over the unrest countrywide.

The students were charged with being in possession of petrol, conspiring to start fires and wilful destruction of property.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’ on Tuesday dragged school heads into the mess, blaming them for failing to put in place proper structures of engaging with students.
