The Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya has been summoned to appear before a Senate committee after failing to present himself to respond to audit queries on Wednesday.

Mr Munya, the Meru Governor, was expected to face the Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee to be questioned on audit queries raised in the 2013/14 financial year.

Following his failure to appear before a sitting at Parliament Buildings, the committee agreed to issue a summons to him which means he must present himself on July 27.

"Governor Munya was to appear before this committee this (Wednesday) morning and we have neither heard from him nor do we expect he will be here. That means this committee is left with no other alternative but to issue a summons to appear before this committee. There is no other alternative but to obey the summons when he receive them," ruled Committee Chairman Anyang' Nyong'o.

Mr Munya is the second governor to be summoned by the House team in two days after Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya got his on Tuesday.

Mr Oparanya failed to honour invites to face the committee on Tuesday to also respond to audit queries for the similar financial year.

He was ordered to appear on July 28.

Senators warned that they would declare governors who fail to respond to audit queries unfit to hold public office.
