The Nairobi County government will revamp its health sector, which has been ranked as the worst performing in the country, Governor Evans Kidero has said.

Speaking at Mbagathi Hospital during the opening ceremony of a newly-built mortuary, Dr Kidero said attendance in city public hospitals had declined over time, with most people complaining about lack of many basic facilities and essential drugs.

He said his government would strive to turn around the situation in the next one year.

“It is unfortunate that all other counties have brought the health services nearer to the people but Nairobi has been letting its residents down,” said Dr Kidero.

The governor said that he will ensure all health facilities in Nairobi are well equipped, have sufficient drugs and adequate staff.

Mobile clinics will also be established especially in slums, the governor added.

“We will ensure that we will have enough outlets that can handle over 5,000 patients and provide mobile clinics in Kibera, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Mathare and Korogocho among others,” said Dr Kidero.

Mama Lucy, Mbagathi and Pumwani Maternity Hospital will be upgraded to level five category in order to ease congestion at the Kenyatta National Hospital, he revealed.

The governor said the new Mbagathi Hospital mortuary, which was built at a cost of Sh110 million, will help ease congestion at the city mortuary as it has been fitted with 112 coolers.
