Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has ordered the immediate closure of Prosoya Ltd, a pet food processing factory in Industrial Area, which has been emitting a foul smell.

Area residents had complained to the county about the smells emitted by the company.

“I have ordered the factory closed on public health grounds until the management of Prosoya Ltd resolve the issue of dangerous emission,” said Dr Kidero.

The governor further ordered that the materials causing the smell be removed from the area. He said the company had been warned before.

The factory is said to be near a school, which had also complained to the National Environmental Management Authority to no avail.

“Nairobi City County’s public health team has cautioned the factory management several times of the health hazards posed by the emissions but they did not heed our warnings. For safety of area residents and students, I have ordered it to be shut down,” said Dr Kidero.

The governor said he would continue enforcing county by-laws by closing down premises and organisations that pose a danger to the lives of residents.

Prosoya Ltd could not be reached for comment on the matter.
