Parts of Nairobi have been plunged into darkness after power lines were destroyed by fire in the Mukuru Fuata Nyayo slum on Thursday morning.

The general manager in charge of network management at Kenya Power, Mr Benson Muriithi, said the fire cut off power supply to the Nairobi West substation.

He said areas affected by the outage are Madaraka Estate, South B, including Mater Hospital, South C, parts of Nairobi West, Wilson Airport and T-Mall.

Other affected estates include Plainsview, Hazina, Otiende, Southland and parts of Lusaka Road.

Mr Muriithi said the company’s technicians are on the scene to assess the damage and plan how to restore power.

He said engineers are also attempting to transfer customers to alternative electricity feeders from nearby substations in Langata, Upperhill and Industrial Area.

“We appeal for patience from customers even as technicians strive to normalise supplies today (Thursday),” he said.
