Nairobi demands Sh9.8m lost during UNCTAD conference

Nairobi County government is demanding Sh9.8 million from the national government it lost as parking revenue during the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) conference held last year.
The UNCTAD 14 conference was held in Nairobi, July 17 to 22, last year where most streets were closed over security reasons leading to loss of millions of revenue from parking fee.
Streets affected included; Standard Street, Wabera street, City Hall/Taifa road, Harambee Avenue, Koinange, Parliament, Kaunda Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Muindi Mbingu, Haile Sellasie and Mama Ngina while the off street included the Sunken and law courts parking bays.
This is after a report tabled by the sectoral committee on Trade, Tourism and Cooperatives following a request of statement by Viwandani MCA Samwel Nyangwara who demanded to know how much money the executive lost as revenue during the period of the conference.
Further, Mr Nyangwara wanted the committee to explain which organisation/agency will bear the responsibility for the loss of revenue and the measures put by the county to recover monies lost and future occurrences.
Trade committee chairman Wilfred Odalo said that the loss was occasioned by security concerns as the event was an important meeting that brought leaders from all over the world.
“There were security zones that were marked as Red Zones thus parking was totally restricted in such areas. However the executive informed the committee that the County Executive for Finance had written to the national government for compensation,” said Mr Odalo.
He also informed the house that no measures have been put in place by the executive to prevent such occurrences but recommended that in the future, a cross-sectional committee will be nominated so as to mitigate on challenges and losses they might incur.
