Academic giants dominate Nairobi County music festival

Academic giants dominated the Nairobi County Music and Dance Festivals at Highridge Girls High School.

Starehe Boys Centre, Moi Girls Nairobi, Lenana School, Pangani Girls, Nairobi School, Sunshine, Kenya High and State House Girls were among the top academic performers that thrilled audiences with their well-thought out pieces.

The week-long festival, that ended over the weekend, saw the schools take home individual awards in set-piece, own composition and public speaking categories.

But the stage also saw newcomers Pumwani Boys, St Lavida, Buruburu Girls, St George’s, Huruma Girls and Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary school dominate the folksong and folkdance categories.

Among the themes central to the presentations were corruption, squatters’ plight, insecurity, drug abuse and child rights abuse cases as well as the teachers’ pay.

Sunshine Secondary School came second.

Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) will mark its 50th anniversary in September 2016.

To celebrate this historic event, the bank has identified the Kenya Music Festival as a tool to communicate messages on its achievements.

CBK is supporting the 2016 Edition of the Kenya Music Festival to a tune of Sh25 million.

The Kenya Music Festival is one of the co-curricular activities in the Education ministry’s calendar.

The national competitions will be held in at the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani in Nairobi in August 2016, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had said.

Meanwhile, Nairobi City County primary schools' music festival starts Tuesday at City Primary School.
