Many Nairobi residents will go without water for two days as the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company shuts the Ngethu treatment plant for maintenance.

The water company on Tuesday announced the interruption of water supply on Thursday and Friday.

The Ngethu water treatment plant supplies 85 per cent of Nairobi residents. The plant is being shut down to allow a reservoir outlet valve to be installed in Gigiri.

The valve burst on August 23 at the Utalii College section, leading to an acute shortage of water in the city centre.

In a statement, the water company said the scheduled maintenance would enhance the production of water, ensuring effective distribution within the city and its environs.

“The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company would like to inform its esteemed customers that there will be a scheduled shutdown of the of the Ngethu water treatment plant on Thursday, September 15, 2016 and Friday September 16, 2016,” read the statement.

The company added that this will be coupled with scheduled annual maintenance works at the Ngethu treatment plant as well as on the transmission pipelines between Ngethu and the Gigiri reservoir.

The company said the following areas will be affected: the whole of the city centre, University of Nairobi main campus, Coca-Cola factory, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, EPZ Athi River and areas along Mombasa Road.

Other affected places are the whole of Industrial Area, areas along Juja Road, Jogoo Road, Outer Ring Road, Kangundo Road, Thika Road, areas along Limuru Road, Karen, Mountain View, Naivasha Road and Kangemi.
