What you need to know:

  • Chief government pathologist Dr Johansen Odour said the heart attack was due to the blocking of blood flow to the heart.
  • The doctor noted that Mr Kajwang’s heart was enlarged due to high blood pressure.
  • Prof Emily Rugena, the family pathologist, said two main tests would be carried out at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
  • Mr Orengo revealed that the late Kajwang’ will be buried on Friday November 28, 2014 in Mbita.

The late Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ died of a heart attack, doctors have said.

Chief government pathologist Dr Johansen Odour said that an analysis on the Senator’s heart showed that he had a narrow valve, also myocardial infarction, and the heart attack was due to the blocking of blood flow to the heart.

“He had a previous scar in his heart, showing he had this before so this new scar formed in an area which is a passage of blood in the heart. His valve had narrowed because of cholesterol,” Dr Odour said.

The doctor noted that Mr Kajwang’s heart was enlarged due to high blood pressure.

Doctors however said these findings were not conclusive and two more tests will be conducted on his blood, tissues and body fluids to give a conclusive cause of his death.

Prof Emily Rugena, the family pathologist, said two main tests would be carried out at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

“We need to run the additional analysis to confirm what we saw in his heart was truly the narrowing of the heart vessels or the infarct.

We will as well do tests of the blood and body samples so as to give a final diagnosis in due course,” she said.

An infarct is a small localised area of dead tissue resulting from failure of blood supply.

BROKEN RIBS

Siaya Senator James Orengo, who witnessed the post-mortem, confirmed that more tests would be done.

“We noticed some features that required further analysis. Four of his ribs were broken on his left side; he had fractures on his chest and a dislocation.

“Doctors also noticed massive corrosion in his stomach and some reddening there as well. These require the two tests to be done to get a conclusive answer,” said Mr Orengo.

At the same time, Mr Orengo, who is the chair of the national funeral planning committee, revealed that the late Kajwang’ will be buried on Friday November 28, 2014 in Mbita.

“We will have a memorial service at Maxwell Shrine in Nairobi on Wednesday morning.

"This will be followed by an interdenominational service at Uhuru Park where Kenyans will also have a chance to view the late senator’s body,” he said.

After the service, Mr Orengo said, the body will be airlifted to Kisumu and later to Homa Bay and finally interred in Mbita.
