A massive police operation is under way in Nairobi after an undercover officer was shot and injured by gangsters.

The officer was shot after he confronted thugs who had carjacked a matatu at around 5am on Juja Road on Wednesday.

Nairobi police commander Japheth Koome said four gangsters boarded the matatu in Dandora posing as passengers.

Two of them drew pistols as the matatu moved past Mathare, then started robbing passengers at gun point.

“The officer removed his pistol with a view of stopping the robbery. One of the gangsters saw him and opened fire, injuring our officer. Right now an operation is under way to ensure the gangsters are arrested. We shall hunt them wherever they go. We shall pursue them even beyond Nairobi,” said Mr Koome.

The gangsters jumped out of the matatu and fled after snatching the officer’s Ceska pistol.

The injured officer was on his way to work in the city centre as an undercover officer.

Separately, another officer, Dismas Ratemo, suffered injuries after he was attacked by a gang of 12 street urchins.

He was walking on New Pumwani Road at 8.30pm on Tuesday when the incident happened.

The officer was recently transferred from Mandera to the Lari Police Station.

“He was holding an Ipad when the gang struck. In the process he sustained deep cuts on the fore head, right and left jaws. They fled in different directions after stoning him. They failed to snatch the tablet. He was treated at New Light Community clinic in Kayole where he was taken by a Good Samaritan. He was treated and discharged,” according to a police report.
