Police in Lang'ata have recovered a firearm that had been stolen from a licensed civilian a few months ago.

The Benelli shotgun, loaded with an unknown number of rounds of ammunition, was spotted inside a dry well on Marula Lane in Karen, Nairobi on Tuesday by a young boy who alerted the police.

Lang'ata OCPD, Elijah Maina said on checking the serial number of the firearm at the Central Firearms Bureau, police discovered that it belonged to a licensed firearm holder who had a few months ago reported that he had lost it in a robbery incident.

“The firearm may have stayed in the well for some time, because it had attracted rust to the point that the magazine cannot be detached,” Mr Maina said.

He added that it was still hard to know how many rounds of ammunition the shotgun is loaded with.

Mr Maina said police will contact the owner of the firearm which is now being examined by ballistic investigators.

“The investigators will also be able to tell whether the firearm was used to commit any robbery while in the arms of those who stole it,” Mr Maina said.
