Commuters using the Syokimau-Nairobi train will get free morning rides on Thursday and Friday.

The offer by the Rift Valley Railways (RVR) and the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) comes as an apology to commuters who had to walk to work on Wednesday after the morning train stalled at Muthurwa.

According to a communication from the RVR and the KRC, the train experienced mechanical problems that could not be resolved quickly, forcing commuters to finish the rest of the journey on foot.

“While on previous similar occasions our mechanical team has been able to resolve such issues on time, this particular instance took longer than anticipated,” said the statement.

While apologising for the incident, the RVR assured commuters of an improved city railway commuter system.

The Syokimau-Nairobi train, which was scheduled to arrive at the Nairobi Railway Station at 7.35am, stalled at around 8.20am.

“Rift Valley Railways apologises to commuters affected by this incident and we want to assure city commuters that we are working hand in hand with the Kenyan Railways to invest in an improved city rail commuter system,” the statement added.

The RVR and the KRC partnered to offer the free morning rides in an effort to assuage commuters who were inconvenienced by the Wednesday incident.

“RVR Group CEO Carlos Andrade and KRC Managing Director Atanas Maina have communicated a partnership to offer Syokimau commuters (a) free morning ride into the city centre for the rest of the week,” concluded the statement.
