Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has blamed lack of discipline among some city residents for the deplorable state of the county.

Dr Kidero also said that for many years, the city lacked a plan to manage its road network and hence the chaos in the transport industry.

Dr Kidero said this in a speech read on his behalf by the county executive for planning, Christopher Khaemba, on Wednesday during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations held in Starehe constituency.

According to the governor, his administration, has, however, worked to help the city reclaim its lost glory.

He said policies and strategic plans like Vision 2030, the Nairobi metropolitan region strategy paper, the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development plan and the Nairobi City County Strategic plan, among others, will guide the management of the city.

“It is my pleasure to report that, although the task is overwhelming and a lot remains to be done, we have managed to construct, repair, open and maintain over 2,460 kilometers of roads in Nairobi,” said Dr Kidero.

He also said the county had recorded achievements in providing affordable and effective healthcare to city residents.

Dr Kidero said plans for the county to have a reliable means of transport are at an advanced stage.

He said: “Rapid high capacity bus transport and light rail and tram corridors have already been identified and set for implementation once plans are ready.”
