High standards of artistic talent were showcased Tuesday at the ongoing Nairobi County Primary Schools Music Festival.

The event, being held at City Primary School, has attracted multiple entries and competition is high to determine who will represent the county in the Metropolitan Regional festival in Makueni County next Month.

On Tuesday, nursery and lower primary pupils took to the stage with items in various categories.

They presented verses and singing games on various themes including the need for pupils to enjoy their leisure time, terrorism, the role of the Central Bank of Kenya and parental responsibility.

KBA School presented a verse on communal responsibility.

“We do not have to wait for the government to do everything for us.

"You are also responsible for your own welfare and that of the community around you.”

This was the message delivered in the choral verse Brother Martin.

In the verse, a boy called Martin brings together children in his estate to clean up the blocked drains and streams after a downpour.

The young volunteers use their spare time to make a big difference in the estate, where adults are always complaining that the government is doing little to ensure their welfare.

The verse seeks to enlighten people that charity begins at home. It was written by Anastasia Kigondu, who was inspired by her son Martin Kigondu.

COLOURFUL PRESENTATIONS

Among the pupils who presented the verse were Megan Mocheche, Stacy Njeri and Phoebe Awuor.

In the children’s singing games, Western style category, Makini Ngong Road proved to be a notch above the rest with their colourful presentations.

In this category, nursery and lower primary pupils present the games that they play outside class. Popular games include Good Morning, Mr Elephant and Brushing the Teeth.

Makini Junior School presented a hilarious Swahili verse, 'Home-waki'.

In the verse, the children lament that pupils in lower primary school are denied their sleep and play time by being assigned a lot of home work.

The verse urged educational authorities to review the syllabus for young learners in order not to overburden them.

Event officials Kinoti Kiogora and Agnes Theuri said that this year’s event has attracted more entries than before.

This has ensured a lot of competition and high quality entries, said Mr Kiogora.

It also makes Nairobi County a serious contender for awards in the regional and national competitions, he added.

The festival ends on  June 24, 2016.
