Top cop, Kenya Power official arrested for taking bribes

  • Chief Inspector Peter Muya Wambua and Mr James Michuki were arrested at Kampi ya Moto area in Nakuru county by officers from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (Eacc) acting on a tip-off.
  • Commission Deputy Director South Rift region Mr Gibert Lukhoba said his officers laid a trap following numerous complaints by the public that the officers extort bribes from Kenya Power Company customers.

A Chief Inspector of police and a senior technician at the Kenya Power Company were on Tuesday evening arrested by anti-graft detectives in Nakuru over alleged bribery.

Chief Inspector Peter Muia Wambua and Mr James Michuki were arrested at Kampi ya Moto area in Nakuru county by officers from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (Eacc) acting on a tip-off.

The two were found with Sh150,000 which they had obtained from the public.

Commission Deputy Director South Rift region Mr Gibert Lukhoba said his officers laid a trap following numerous complaints by the public that the officers extort bribes from Kenya Power Company customers.

The officer it attached to Kenya Power’s security department.

“We got a tip-off that the two were receiving bribes from people whom they claimed had illegal electricity connections,” said Mr Lukhoba.

Mr Lukhoba said the officers who are being held in Nakuru Central Police station be charged in court with engaging in extortion upon conclusion of investigations.

The EACC official further called on the public to continue reporting corruption incidents and supporting the war against graft.
