DHL Express has handed over a playground it constructed for St Therese Development Centre in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

While handing over the facility, the Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, DHL Express, Charles Brewer said DHL was not only concerned with movement of cargo but was also involved the welfare of people.

“Our role in global trade is more than just moving boxes; it’s about how we can be involved in the people’s lives,” said Mr Brewer.

The playground is among key projects undertaken by DHL.

DHL partnered with the centre in 2006 to help realise the dream of its director Fr Isaac Makarios who wanted to create counselling and rehabilitation centre for sexually abused children aged 3 – 16 year and who have nowhere to turn to after going through traumatic experiences in their lives.

The centre is home to 70 school-going children and 80 physically and mentally abused women.

LOGISTICAL SUPPORT

DHL Express has been providing free logistical support to the centre.

It has helped in ensuring donations to the centre are shipped from Canada.

These include medical and school supplies such as books, tools, clothing, toys and educational materials.

DHL has also donated two vehicles to the centre, one of them being a school van.

Speaking during the official handover of the playground, Mr Brewer said DHL was pleased to make a positive impact on the lives of the beneficiaries of the project.

“This is an extremely exciting day for all of us. I’ve been with DHL for 32 years.

"We help out in different ways across the world, but when I came to this home, I experienced a life changing moment,” he said.

He said the construction of the playground was a good example of how people can create positive change in the lives of others.

“It is satisfying to see the children’s smiles; we hope this playground brings them many hours of fun and pleasure because that is what life is about – maximizing the good days.

“We are very glad to be involved and we will continue to do greater things,” he concluded.
