A file on Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria’s involvement in skirmishes pitting hawkers and county askaris last week has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice on whether he should be charged or not.

Nakuru Divisional Police Commander Benard Kioko told Nation.co.ke that statements had been recorded by county askaris, the MP and hawkers present as well as Administration Police officers on duty.

The file, he said, had since been compiled and forwarded to the DPP for advice.

He said that as a State officer Mr Gikaria’s arrest must follow the laid down procedure where advice is sought from the DPP before any action can be taken against him on allegations of malicious damage to Nakuru County government property.

COUNTY ASKARIS STILL HOSPITAL

A visit to Valley Hospital where four county askaris are recuperating showed that their condition was still serious and that doctors were yet to compile a report on their state of health and the extent of injuries sustained.

Last week, irate hawkers attacked a group of county askaris who reportedly attempted to demolish new structures they had put up outside a prominent restaurant.

The incident saw several askaris hurt in the ensuing melee which Governor Kinuthia Mbugua condemned saying the MP must face the full consequences of his actions.

Sources at Valley Hospital said that medical reports on the injured could only be filled after the conditions of the county askaris are declared stable and the extent of their injuries determined.

This has delayed investigations into the incident that continues to draw condemnation from across the county with the Peace Process Accord Elders terming it unacceptable saying it goes against a pact made before the elections that Nakuru must not witness any violence among its residents.
