Nakuru County Executive Member for Livestock and Fisheries Dr Stanley Chepkwony has assured residents that donkey meat is safe for consumption.

Speaking in his office, Dr Chepkwony called on residents not to panic, adding that no donkey meat will be sold without proper inspection.

This comes after an uproar that greeted the establishment of a donkey abattoir in Naivasha.

Dr Chepkwony said the slaughterhouse was not yet operational because it has yet to get approval from the national government.

“Donkey meat is safe and good for human consumption just like any other non-ruminant livestock as long as they have been slaughtered in proper hygienic conditions and inspected,” he said.

Dr Chepkwony said Kenyans should embrace this type of meat because it is expected to provide an economic boost to Naivasha and Nakuru County considering that the meat is expected to be exported to China, where there is a growing demand.

He added that the abattoir will also provide hundreds of job opportunities for the locals.

He said the process had already been approved by the county government through the county assembly and is now awaiting the approval of the national government for operations to begin.

He has also dismissed reports that the abattoir will be used to slaughter zebras, which are similar to donkeys.

“The new facility, which has modern equipment and proper waste disposal techniques promises to solve that unsightly and unhealthy problem by legally obtaining, slaughtering and disposing donkey parts, while also boosting the local economy,” he said.
