  • Ms Gichuki said she was living on the man’s property with her two sons aged 18 and 16.

A church wedding was temporarily stopped when a woman claiming to be the groom’s wife of 19 years interrupted the ceremony at an orthodox church in Nakuru on Sunday.

The woman, Ms Loise Wanja Gichuki, arrived at the Holly Resurrection Orthodox Church and informed the priest that the groom was his husband with whom they had two sons.

Trouble started when the bridal party entered the church and Ms Githuki moved to the altar and stood next to the groom Mr Samuel Gichuki.

It was a spectacle to behold as the groom was sandwiched by his estranged wife and his bride Ms Joyce Mukami Njoroge.

Ms Gichuki could not even allow the couples to take the vows as she interrupted at every word prompting the priest to introduce her to the church.

The priest told the congregants that Ms Gichuki had told him that she was Mr Gichuki’s wife and even showed him family photos as evidence.

He however added that the estranged woman did not have any legal documents to prove that she was Mr Gichuki’s legal wife and neither did she have a court order to stop the wedding.

“I have a notice of marriage from the registrar of marriages and nothing legally bars me from uniting this two,” said the priest.

He said the couple notified the government office of their impending wedding on May 13 this year and got the notice of marriage three days later.

“As for the church, we have been announcing the wedding since May 31 and it is not fair for anyone to appear on the wedding day to stop it,” he said.

At this point, Ms Gichuki noticed that there was no way of stopping the wedding and started screaming at the top of her voice.

She grabbed the notice of marriage, tore it in pieces before attempting to chew it.

It is at this point that she was forcefully ejected from the church amid screams and cursing words.

Ms Gichuki said she was living on the man’s property with her two sons aged 18 and 16.

She wondered how the church would have presided over such a union yet she had proof including her national Identity Card to show that she was the groom’s wife.
