Police in Nakuru on Monday morning gunned down four gangsters and recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of ammunition at the KFA roundabout.

Nakuru Divisional Police Commander Bernard Kioko hailed residents who tipped off the police by describing the vehicle that had been used to rob unsuspecting motorists around town.

The four, among them a woman, were among six gangsters who had earlier been reported moving from one side of the town to another robbing motorists before they were cornered at the KFA roundabout, where they attempted to engage police in a shootout.

Their luck ran out when their driver drove off, leaving them on the road to engage the officers.

"Police dared them to stop, but they opted to open fire.

“I urge members of the public to help us track (down) the two gangsters who fled since we believe they sustained gunshot wounds," he said.

Mr Kioko said investigations had been launched on the four gangsters who bore no identification documents.

He urged victims who might have been robbed by the gangsters to come forward and help police unravel the network of the six-member gang.

"We are not resting until we establish their hideout and get hold of the remaining two. Nakuru is a business hub for people ready to do honest business not for gangsters," he said.

Mr Kioko said the bodies were taken to the Nakuru Municipal Mortuary, with a massive manhunt under way to track down the escape vehicle that he said had several bullet holes.

The Police boss reassured residents that all information received would be treated with confidence, adding that a closer working relationship between police and residents had helped make Nakuru one of the safest and fastest-growing towns.

Police also recovered two toy pistols and a Somali sword and expressed optimism that the others would be found since residents had identified some of the fallen gangsters as ex-convicts who had recently been released from prison.
