The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has protested the use of clock outs to monitor teachers in secondary schools in Nakuru County.

Teachers in some schools are required to clock in and out by putting their left thumb finger to the machine every time they report to work and leave the school.

Kuppet’s branch executive secretary, Mr Gakau Mbugua, Samy Kambo (chairman) and Theuri Rukwaro (treasurer) claimed that the use of the machines could cause cancer for teachers.

Mr Gakau did not present any scientific facts to back his claim.

Schools using the clock outs were Nakuru High, Afraha High School and Moi Secondary School.

Mr Kambo said; “The machines are being used by lazy school principals who are unable to supervise their teachers.”

He said teachers’ reporting time does not always start at 8am and end at 5pm like civil servants but their working hours start as early as 6am and end at 10pm.

“This money that the principals are using to buy unnecessary machines should be diverted to buy books and other essential equipment that are urgently needed in schools,” said Mr Kambo.

The union said that they were not against the monitoring of teachers, but said they will not accept their members to be exposed to daily radiation of harmful rays that could lead to serious medical problems.
