Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria has landed in trouble over the crackdown illicit alcohol.

The MP was charged on Wednesday with dumping liquor bottles and boxes at Nakuru’s KFA and Mburu Gichua Road roundabouts.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku released the MP on a Sh200,000 cash bail and ordered him to attend court on October 19 for the hearing of the case.

National Environmental Management Authority prosecutor Moses Mburu said the act by the MP was a bad example to residents as he led hundreds of his supporters to destroy liquor considered harmful.

The MP was charged that on diverse dates between July 11 to 16, he dumped the liquor at the roundabouts, where it was set ablaze.

Lawyer Ochang Ajiro protested the prosecution of Mr Gikaria at the Nakuru County Courts, claiming his client will not get justice.

The lawyer claimed the charges were "politically motivated" by Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s government.

Mr Ajiro said Mr Mbugua had vowed to "finish him politically" over his campaign to rid Nakuru Town East constituency of lethal alcohol.

The MP declined to plead to the charges, saying the charge sheet bore the Nakuru County government's logo, which made him fear he might not get justice.

The magistrate ordered the prosecution to provide the MP with copies of witness statements.
