Police imposter Waiganjo granted bail

A Naivasha court has released suspected police imposter Joshua Waiganjo on bond.

The court released him on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of the same amount, with an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000.

Prosecutors, who had asked for two weeks to check whether the accused has other pending cases, did not object to the bail application.

The High Court ordered a fresh trial in a case where Mr Waiganjo was handed a five-year jail term in October 2015 by a lower court.

The accused has denied five charges.

Mr Waiganjo requested the court to grant him bail, saying he was suffering from diabetes and it was not his fault that the case was set for a fresh hearing.

He was convicted of wearing police uniforms without authority and impersonating a police officer and three charges of being in possession of government equipment.

Mr Waiganjo was, however, cleared of robbery-with-violence charges.

After the ruling, Mr Waiganjo said he will now focus his energy on trying to capture the Njoro parliamentary seat, which he is contesting as an independent candidate.

The case will be mentioned on August 29. The hearing will be held on October 12.
