County governments have been urged to work closely with the Teachers Service Commission offices in their areas in order to bring services closer to teachers and enable them solve issues at the county level.

While admitting that there is a shortage of teachers in the country, TSC Chairperson Dr Lydia Nzomo encouraged schools to utilise the available teachers optimally.

She called on the county education boards to regulate opening of new schools in their counties so as to avoid the mushrooming of many schools which lack teachers and learning facilities.

She noted that expansion of schools is cheaper and more economical than opening of new schools everywhere.

Dr Nzomo pointed out that the commission will take stern actions against teachers found guilty of rape or molestation of students.

The commission, she said, would publish the names of such teachers so that they may not be employed in any school.

“Other people can make mistakes but not teachers. They are people who are responsible and supposed to model children to be better people in the society,” she said.

Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said that county governments were ready to cooperate with TSC in order to improve education standards.

With a population of over 500,000 students and pupils in Nakuru County, the governor attributed the good transition rate of pupils from primary schools to high schools to efforts by teachers.

He, however, noted that shortage of teacher was still a big problem in many schools.
