TSC to devolve disciplinary unit to counties

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will soon decentralize its discipline division to counties in order to safeguard students' welfare.

The move comes at a time when the commission is grappling with increased number of indiscipline cases among teachers in the country.

The officer in charge of teachers' conduct at the commission, Ms Cicily Musyoki, said the new development is in line with TSC code of conduct and regulation 2015.

However, she did not indicate the number of cases the commission was handling yearly.

"The cases are many and have affected learning as some of the culprits have been dismissed from the service while others are serving interdiction," she said.

During her address to more than 700 head teachers at a two-day workshop at Hotel Kunste in Nakuru Town, she told the head teachers to closely monitor cases of sexual harassment of students.

The workshop ended yesterday.

"Any case of reported sexual molestation should be handled with speed and as the school managers your have crucial responsibility to ensure justice is done," said Ms Musyoki.

The counties represented in the workshop organised by Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association include: Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kajiado, Narok, Baringo, Nairobi, Nyeri and Kiambu.

She further said the commission had noted an increase in the number of drunkard teachers, and that it has revised its policy to address the problem.

"We are giving such teachers a sick leave of 90 days with full salary to attend rehabilitation centre and after reforming they are reinstated in the service," she added.

The capacity building workshop focused on strategic management of emerging challenges in secondary schools.
