Residents burn down houses, destroy crops after boy kills uncle

Irate Chebing’ombe residents set five houses ablaze after a Form Four student stabbed his uncle to death on Tuesday evening.

The angry residents kicked the boy’s family out of their homestead before setting the five houses on fire.

The mob also cut down crops on the family’s farm, including maize and bananas.

The rampaging residents did not spare the family’s livestock either, slaughtering two cows and a number of hens to vent their anger.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidate at Sosera Secondary School fatally stabbed his uncle with a knife on Tuesday evening.

The victim was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Speaking to the Nation, Robert Nyambane, the victim's brother, said the attack happened at around 7pm on Tuesday.

He said they were alerted by a distress call from residents who had rushed to help the man as he lay in a pool of blood outside his gate.

“Residents slaughtered livestock and poultry, cut down crops and destroyed property belonging to the suspected killer’s family in an act of revenge,” said Manga Assistant Chief Charles Karaya

He appealed to the residents not to take rash and illegal actions to avenge criminal acts.

“Two wrongs do not make a right. Let us learn not to break the law in order to protest another unlawful act by rogue elements,” he said.

The suspect is still at large as the body of the victim lies at the Nyansiongo Mortuary.
