Leaders in Nyandarua County have called on police to speed up investigations on the assault of a Standard One pupil by three teachers at Kamukunji Primary School in Ol Joro Orok constituency.

The leaders, led by Governor Francis Kimemia and Ol Joro Orok MP Michael Muchira, condemned the incident, saying teachers are entrusted with children to shape them positively and not to mistreat them.

REGRETTABLE

The seven-year-old pupil sustained serious injuries on his private parts after allegedly being beaten by his teachers last week on Thursday.

“I am urging teachers in our schools to show leadership in order to bring up a disciplined and morally upright society. It is regrettable that teachers still impose corporal punishment instead of using better means to handle them,” said Mr Kimemia.

At the same time, Mr Muchira called on parents from the school and area residents to be calm, saying stern action will be taken against the culprits.

INTERDICTED

He appealed to parents not to withdraw their children from the school, saying the government is addressing the matter.

“The Teachers Service Commission is also investigating the matter and if the teachers are found culpable, they will be interdicted,” said Mr Muchira.

Mr Muchira also called on the County Director of Education to investigate claims that some of the teachers owned bars, saying this is compromising their performance.

One of the teachers has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at Ol Joro Orok Police Station.

AT LARGE

According to Ol Joro Orok Police Division boss Sylvester Githungo, the teacher was arrested on Saturday evening at his home and police are still searching for his two other colleagues.

It was not clear why the teacher who was arrested on Saturday is yet to be arraigned in court.

Two other teachers are still at large.
