At least 149 households in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County benefited from the ongoing rural electrification project.

While commissioning the lighting Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter on Friday said at 70 other households would be connected to the grid in a few months.

Villages in Endarasha and Naromoru wards were the first beneficiaries with promises that other areas in the constituency would benefit.

Mr Keter was accompanied by Energy Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge, Petroleum Principal Secretary Andrew Wahome and Kenya Power staff.

The CS promised to ensure a transformer is erected to facilitate the tapping of other homes.
He asked residents to embrace the programme and abandon the use of petroleum.

“Petroleum prices are going up and becoming expensive. We all need to use electricity, " he said.

Area MP Kanini Kega and Mr Keter urged residents to register as voters to ensure the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

70PC CONNECTION
“By 2020 we hope to have 70 per cent of households connected to electricity. That will only be made possible if you register as a voter and vote,” he told Naromoru residents.
Mr Kega echoed this, noting that the Jubilee government was committed to complete projects it had launched since 2013 in the next term.

An elated resident Mary Wanjiku told the Cabinet Secretary that her children would perform better in school with better lighting.

He told the beneficiaries residents they will pay the instalments through power bills.

The project, which is specifically targeting households, uses cheaper transmission line designs to cut the cost of connectivity to Sh15,000 from the Sh36,000 that applicants whose homes are located within 600 metres of a transformer have been paying.

The plan is to connect 2.3 million new customers to the national power grid.
