A boda boda rider has been arrested in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, after he stabbed a colleague over a Sh3,000 motorcycle radio.

Two police officers were injured after a lynch mob baying for the attacker’s blood pelted them with stones.

The officers used tear gas and shot in the air to disperse the angry mob.

Witnesses said the suspect, Danford Kabange Mwangi, confronted his fellow rider, Emmanuel Hamisi, at about 8pm demanding to know why he had not returned his radio.

A scuffle ensued between the two men before the suspect drew a knife and stabbed Mr Hamisi in the chest.

An enraged public descended on the suspect, who attempted to flee after the attack, pelting him with stones.

The residents wanted to burn him but he managed to run into a drug store, where he locked himself up until police officers arrived to rescue him.

Police whisked him away to the Kiganjo Police Station under heavy guard.

Nonetheless, the locals turned on the suspect’s motorcycle and burned it.

It was a double tragedy as residents who rushed to take the injured rider to hospital were involved in a road accident.

Kieni East Divisional Police Commander Michael Mbaluku said the driver of the vehicle ferrying the victim to hospital lost control and it landed in a ditch near River Honi, on the Nyeri-Kiganjo Road.

“Nobody was seriously hurt in the accident but a lot of time was lost and the victim bled out and succumbed to the stabbing injury,” said Mr Mbaluku.

Mr Hamisi was pronounced dead on arrival at Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

Mr Mwangi will be presented in court on Wednesday.

“Once we collect all statements the suspect will be taken to court as required by the law,” said the area police boss.
