Two bumps and rumble strips have been put up at Gatitu on the Nyeri-Karatina road after residents protested over the rising number of road crashes.

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) erected the bumps following numerous protests by residents, who claimed at least 70 people had been hit by speeding vehicles in the past three years.

Local leaders, led by Ngunjiri Wambugu, however, accused KeNHA of laxity, saying the lives would not have been lost had the authority moved fast to address their demands.

“If KeNHA had taken action immediately a demand for bumps was made, many lives would have been saved. The laxity in acting has caused anguish to many families in this village,” said Mr Wambugu.

Last week, the residents demonstrated and threatened to dig trenches on the road to reduce crashes.
