Five people were Wednesday morning seriously injured, three of them seriously, after three vehicles were involved in an accident at Chaka along the Nyeri-Nanyuki highway.

Two drivers and a turn boy suffered serious injuries when a tipper lorry, a truck and a matatu collided in the early morning accident.

Residents who witnessed the accident that occurred at around 10am said that the tipper that was coming from Nanyuki was speeding and its brakes failed.

The driver reportedly tried swerving into an access road next to a milk processing plant but collided head on with the truck that was headed in the opposite direction.

A 14-seater matatu that was coming from Nanyuki rammed into the lorry.

The tipper, which transports building materials, is said to have been operating along the route despite being unroadworthy.

TRAPPED

The driver and his turn boy were stuck in the mangled tipper but members of public managed to pull them out.

The driver suffered several fractures in the leg while his partner suffered a concussion.

Occupants in the matatu escaped unhurt but the driver of the truck suffered head and abdominal injuries.

Two other occupants of the truck suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

Traffic flow was disrupted for several hours as police officers and members of the public struggled to remove the wreckages of the three vehicles that had blocked the busy highway.

Central Region Traffic Police Commander Jane Kuria said that the three injured victims had been taken to hospital and were in stable condition.

“Members of the public rushed the injured victims to hospital where they were treated. One of the drivers was in critical condition,” said the police boss.

Lorry drivers along the route have in the past been accused of driving carelessly and operating unroadworthy vehicles.
