Former Nyeri County executives jailed for 3 years over graft

Three former Nyeri County executives have been jailed for three years for failing to comply with procurement laws and funds management procedures.

The three, John Maina (Land and Infrastructure), Martin Wamwea (Finance and Planning) and Chief of Staff Simon Wachira were found guilty of irregularly issuing a Sh3.7 million contract to a private company.

They were fined Sh400,000 each or serve one year in jail for flouting procurement laws.

The former county officials were further ordered to pay a fine of Sh7.5 million, failing which they would serve two years in prison.

Nyeri Chief Magistrate John Onyiego on Monday said the sentences would run concurrently.

The three had been charged with six counts of failing to comply with procurement laws and funds management procedures as well as abuse of office.

The court, however, acquitted the three of abuse-of-office charges for lack of evidence.
