Six MPs from Nyeri County have warned Governor Nderitu Gachagua that he risks being isolated if he continued the push for a referendum.

Lawmakers Esther Murugi (Nyeri Town) Ndung’u Gethenji (Tetu), Kanini Kega (Kieni), Peter Weru (Mathira), Mary Wambui (Othaya) and Priscillah Nyokabi (Nyeri Woman Representative) said the Nyeri people had said they did not want a referendum.

Through a signed statement released at the weekend, the MPs said if a referendum were held, the question would be if the people really needed the governors.

Mr Gethenji also reiterated the same resolve when he visited his constituency on Saturday.

COFFEE CRISIS

"We do not want to hear our governor say the county supports a referendum. Those collecting signatures will not get any in Nyeri County,” said Mr Gethenji when he commissioned a water project in his constituency on Saturday.

The MPs also asked Governor Gachagua to resolve the coffee payment crisis facing farmers.

The MPs further asked the county chief not to interfere with any other sector of the county’s economy, calling on the auditor-general to audit all projects started under the governor’s watch.
