Hundreds of residents on Saturday took part in a walk to raise funds for cancer patients.

At least 500 students from 35 secondary and primary schools in the county participated in the 10 km walk initiated by Nyeri Hospice.

Also corporate firms such as Britam, Kenya Commercial Bank and Madison Insurance were involved in the event.

The Hospice intends to raise Sh2 million, an increase from last year's Sh1.8 million.

Nyeri Hospice Chief Executive Officer Sarafina Gichohi said the money will help offer medical care to terminally ill patients, concentrating on cancer and HIV-positive patients in the county.

She said the activity was successful and urged Kenyans to contribute to the cause through donations and sponsorship.

“We appeal to Kenyans to support this noble task. Their support will help uplift a family in so many ways.”

The county government has assisted the facility by deploying staff at their clinic and supplying medicine.

The event brought business in the Nyeri town to a standstill as the procession made its way through the streets.

Kenya Police Band kept the participants entertained with their tunes.

However, impatient motorists defied police instructions and interrupted the walk after some road sections were closed.
