Members of the Nyeri County Assembly have rejected a proposal to increase Governor Nderitu Gachagua’s travel expenditure to Sh23 million, terming the county government’s Sh6.4 billion budget estimates exaggerated.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee noted that the Assembly would cut unnecessary expenses factored in the budget and allocate more money to development projects.

Committee chairman Duncan Gituanja said the county had increased allocations for Governor Gachagua’s travel from Sh5 million in the last budget to Sh23 million.

The county government has also allocated Sh11 million to purchase a Mercedes-Benz vehicle for the governor.

Mr Gitaunja, also the Leader of the Majority, said this was a crucial year for the MCAs.

“We are keen on implementing more development projects and completing those are have stalled,” said Mr Gituanja.

“We cannot waste resources on luxuries,” he said.

Mr Gituanja said the office of the County Secretary had also allocated Sh10 million for the purchase of a software. He pre-empted the move last week by the county assembly to reject sections in the Budget.
