Motorists were on Saturday evening stuck in a major traffic snarl up at Kagocho Hill on the Karatina-Nairobi highway for more than four hours.

Traffic was at a standstill as a crane attempted to clear from the road a truck that was involved in an accident on Friday.

"Some of us had a hectic day and want to get home. The clearing operation should been done at midnight," said one of the motorists Ruth Njoki.

According to witnesses the trailer crashed on Friday at about 4 pm.

"We think the brakes failed as the driver descended the hill. He tried to swerve and landed on the road," said a witness James Muchiri.

Police were having a hard time controlling traffic on the busy road, with build up from Sagana to Karatina town.

The highway was unusually busy as revellers travelled back to Nairobi from the KCB rally that was held in Nanyuki.

Motorists from Nyeri were diverted to use the Kerugoya route.
