Follow Kinuthia Mbugua example, Mt Kenya independents told

Kieni MP Kanini Kega has called on independent candidates in Jubilee strongholds to drop their bids in favour of aspirants who won tickets in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party.

Mr Kega said the independents, who resigned from Jubilee after losing in the primaries, should follow Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s suit, who quit the race and decided to support Lee Kinyanjui.

“Independents cannot claim to be supporting President Kenyatta while they are working hard to reduce his troops in the National Assembly and Senate.

“Those in the President’s strongholds should step down and support their rivals in Jubilee if they are truly loyal to the President as they claim,” said Mr Kega.

He lauded governor Mbugua’s move saying it reduced competition in Jubilee’s camp in Nakuru governor’s race.

“Their presence on the ballot paper will not lead to high turnout but will reduce chances for Jubilee Party candidates,” he said on Saturday while addressing journalists in his constituency.

The MP, whose re-election bid is being opposed by six aspirants, including three independents, observed that the elected President will face uncooperative Legislative Houses due to high number of independents.

“If we have a President who wins the elections but gets the minority in parliament, the results will be highly disputed. Also party-less members of the National Assembly cannot be whipped and therefore they can paralyse House Business since they cannot be controlled,” explained Mr Kega.
